About This Use Case

Building a casita for family.

The multigenerational casita is one of the most common projects we build — and one of the most personally meaningful. Whether it's aging parents who want to stay independent, adult children returning from college, or extended family who stay for months, a private backyard casita solves the problem that no other arrangement quite handles.

Unlike a guest room, a casita has its own entrance, full kitchen, private bathroom, and separate utilities. Family members have their own space. You have yours.

Which model is right for family living? The Hacienda (980 SF, 1 bed / 2 bath) is our most popular multigenerational model — dual bathrooms, oversized bedroom, and walk-in closet make it genuinely comfortable for full-time living. The Retreat (720 SF) is a strong option when budget is a consideration.

Common Questions

The Hacienda (980 SF) provides full-time comfortable living with dual bathrooms and an oversized bedroom. The Retreat (720 SF) is a step down in size but genuinely livable for one person. We recommend based on your specific family situation.

Yes. We can incorporate wider doorways (36"), walk-in showers with bench seating, lever-style hardware, and lower countertops. These are easiest to build in from the start. Discuss during your design consultation.

Casitas are typically connected to your property's main utility services and can be separately metered. We discuss utility configuration during the permitting phase.

Owner-occupancy requirements under HB 2720 apply to rental use. Family use of a casita is generally not subject to those provisions. We advise on your specific situation during consultation.
